Great Migration Kenya

60 Minutes Travels To Kenya To Witness One of The World's Greatest Natural Spectacles

Scott Pelley visits Mara Camp Kenya, the site of the great wildebeest migration, and looks at the threats to this natural spectacle comprised of over a million animals.

grin Got Questions? TIP: Reserve 1 year or more in advance.

GO SOON ALERT: World's greatest wildlife spectacle jeopardized by plans to build road. -globalpost.com

If you could go just one place, anywhere on the planet, to see the most spectacular wildlife, you'd want to head east to catch a sight that comes around every year, but only for a short time.

It's called the "great migration," an endless march of life, and death and rebirth for millions of animals. When you see it, you might agree this is one of the greatest shows on Earth. We thought you should see it now, because there's no guarantee that it'll be around forever.

There was a time when epic migrations were common, when millions of buffalo in North America were on the move, for example. But today, to see what that must have been like, you have to travel to East Africa.

There, in late summer, more than a million wildebeest cross the volcanic plain of the Maasai Mara in Kenya, pushing through one of the most awe-inspiring wildlife habitats on Earth. Nearly everything Africa has to offer can all be found in one place - zebras, giraffes, elephants, lions, crocodiles and more.

The dry season is moving the herds, concentrating them where there is still grass and water. It's a march of 350 miles, up from the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania to the Maasai Mara National Reserve in Kenya and back again.

A 'Perpetual Tour' can leave a Permanent Legacy

Seaborne private residences aren't a new concept, but the $1.1 billion ocean liner Utopia, which will make her maiden voyage in 2013, uniquely combines on-board living with opportunities to improve the lives of others.

While the 190 luxury residence owners enjoy what the ship's founders call a 'perpetual tour,' calling into port at events such as the Cannes Film Festival and the Rio Carnival, they will also be able to leave a permanent legacy facilitated by Utopia's philanthropy programmes.

Utopia has partnered with travel operator Exquisite Safaris Philanthropic (which has generated more than $1 million in charitable donations since 2008) to develop (NGO) project funding for its residents and guests, which will benefit charities in the ports visited.
The ship will also have a full time philanthropy concierge who can arrange meetings with other philanthropists, organize on-board galas, and facilitate the formation of foundations to be passed down to future generations. -howtospendit.com

SCHOOL LUNCHES IN KILIMANJARO
"Luxurious lodges complete with four-poster beds and table linens are not normally what to expect on a safari, but Exquisite Safaris Mara Great Migration Camp in Tanzania is a five-star affair-as is the exquisite Dunes Camp on the Indian Ocean, where the beach doubles as a runway for the small plane that brings you there. But this trip isn't all wildlife-watching and beach hammocks.

Exquisite Safaris Philanthropic collaborates with nonprofits such as Kids of Kilimanjaro, where travelers can engage and contribute towards a school lunch program that feeds 13,000 students and extends school hours."

Taking you Farther. Bringing you Closer.

grin Got Questions?

One hundred and fifty years ago visionary poet Walt Whitman warned that the industrial revolution (not to mention our digital revolution) was artificially accelerating the tempo of people's lives to the point where humans where losing touch with their inner rhythms and the natural pulse of their thoughts and emotions.

Whitman urged people to appreciate and occasionally cultivate idle time as a way to refresh the soul, in order to become more receptive to the human part of us.

More recently, Jeremy Rifkin the author of Time Wars warned of the dangers to the human psyche of too much speed.

"We have quickened the pace of life only to become less patient. We have become more organized, but less spontaneous, less joyful. We are better prepared to act on the future, but less able to enjoy the present and reflect on the past.

Humanity has created an artificial time environment punctuated by mechanical contrivances and electronic impulses."
Today, over 75% of families share dinner once a week or less and parents face more outside the home responsibilities, and less intimacy and meaningful experiences with those they love.

Whitman's prescient observation has been clearly validated.

Our experience (Exquisite Safaris Philanthropic & Engaged Legacies) has proven that the most powerful under-utilized tool for creating multi-generational family intimacy, unity, growth and transformation is the private family philanthropic travel experience.
A purpose driven high impact philanthropic travel experience creates a wonderful way to communicate with the people you love, the people with whom you want to share the most important learning insights and feelings of your life.
We give our hearts to those who share our experiences and we cherish those people both in and out of our immediate families, whose stories we have truly heard because we then understand their world.

Intimate Exquisite Safaris Philanthropic private travel experiences help us find meaning in our lives while we expand our perspectives, practice generosity and experience teachable moments that imprint our memories and model our values.

Creating virtuous children through early and often age appropriate philanthropic travel has proven itself countless times as a unifying transformational family experience.

Can Money Buy You Happiness?
Marc Gold was set on the path he now travels when he was just a child, when his father, photographer Albert Gold, explained "the meaning of life." He took the 8-year-old into the bathroom and had him look in the mirror. Gold recounts the conversation:

Albert: ''What do you see?'
Marc: 'I see myself.'
Albert: 'Okay. How old will you be in 70 years?'
Marc: '78.'
Albert: 'Okay, when you are 78 years old, look in the mirror again and ask yourself one question, because by then your life will be almost over: 'Did you live a life that made this a better world or not? Very simple. If the answer is yes, I am proud of you, and if not, I am disappointed.'
Marc: 'But how am I going to make this a better world?'
Albert: 'That's your job. You figure it out.'
Mark has spent his life exploring the world as a philanthropic traveler.

Philanthropy Begins at Home
A parent's greatest challenge is how to infuse character into children and grandchildren so they will have the underlying fiber to use their present and future social, financial and intellectual capital in ways that will be a blessing to them, their family and the world.
There is no vacation from a parent's obligation to deliver leadership by example and being an affluent parent comes with even greater responsibilities.
It's not just the responsibility of preventing money from harming your child -but the responsibility of using that money to parent in positive ways.

Creating teachable transformative moments that include impactful lessons in honesty, humility, sacrifice, industry, responsibility and temperance have largely failed in the Baby Boomer world of unprecedented affluence and excessive consumerism.

Families who are succeeding in raising well adjusted children do so because they always remember that every moment counts.

When I was just seven years old, my grandparents leveraged a rare opportunity to introduce me to the daily march for survival in rural Haiti.

My grandparents intent was to expose me to the world that I would inherit, both good and not so good.

Their vision included helping me develop a strong sense of self through challenging experiences and to impress upon me at a very early age that our family wealth was a blessing and a tool for the greater good, not the definition of who we are.

As you might imagine, my memories of our four-hour ride into a jungle village with unclothed, impoverished villagers left a lasting respect for my grandparents who answered my questions and helped me to comprehend what I had witnessed and how we might help.

My grandfather's kind words and respect for those who we met and his generosity that day has profoundly shaped my worldview.
"The real source of wealth and capital in this new era is not material things.. it is the human mind, the human spirit, the human imagination, and our faith in the future." -Steve Forbes
Thoughtful family wide participation in philanthropy leads to growth in self- esteem, stability, imagination, and a rewarding family life.

Research indicates that the adult philanthropist becomes the values model for their children and grand kids.

Personal Transformation, Wealth & Wisdom
There are many components to a charitable giving strategy, from donating money to causes we believe in to volunteering our time to setting up a donor advised fund or private foundation to create a lasting legacy of giving.

Savvy high net worth parents realize that full family involvement in philanthropic travel requires more than just a call to their black card concierge hotline.

Transformation requires outside help in the form of a philanthropic advisor experienced in choreographing every detail of the transformational experience to drive the deeper meaning and impact on all members of the family.

The full potential of Philanthropic Travel is realized through a professional process that requires a consultative and collaborative team of experts in philanthropy, investments, estate planning, family dynamics and family mission development.

You should expect to be engaged in questions that focus on every member of your family, their personal preferences, current philanthropic experience and future vision.

The hardest part of the planning process (for me) is asking the essential questions about what is most important to the people involved and determining how the answers can be used to enhance each family member's growth and trust.

Over the past 6 years it has been my unique privilege to listen to family members share their aspirations and dreams of how they can make a difference in the world and leave a trace of the best of ourselves once we are gone. I have found inspiration in creating family transformation and sharing the personal victories catalyzing over $1 million dollars in high impact philanthropy donations.

Like Benjamin Franklin stated in Poor Richard's almanac:

If you would be forgotten,
As soon as you are dead and rotten,
Either write things worth the reading,
Or do things worth the writing.

A few stories worth the writing..
"Visiting the Matare neighborhood outside Nairobi was a powerful experience for our family. What we encountered grabbed our hearts. Living there does not make for an easy life, and it is so much different from what we know. And yet we found our hearts warmed from this unforgettable experience. David opened the community up to us in ways we would have never been able to see ourselves. We enjoyed a chance to hear people's stories, to learn about their hopes and dreams, and to enjoy playing sports with local youth. Franklin's outreach is powerful, and since our visit we now feel like we can help him make a difference through our growing friendship. Our lives will never be the same and we look forward to visiting again."

Quintessential Philanthropic Travel
Two Februaries ago, in the middle of a sticky East African night, Ted van Beuren sat in a remote region of Kenya, eyes fixed on the horizon. From his cushy Rusinga Island Lodge bed, near the shores of Lake Victoria, he watched as a storm approached like none he'd ever witnessed. Lightning bolts fired in blinding spurts, each time illuminating a landscape of fallen trees and grazing hippos. And the sound of thunder, at first almost inaudible, rose to a pitch so high it felt like a thousand bombs exploding in unison.

In the same room, van Beuren's 23-year-old son tried to sleep. But as the seconds passed and the eye of the squall moved closer, a blast of wind burst through the net door, blowing the room's curtains against the ceiling and the atmosphere into chaos.

"What was that?" Ted Jr. yelled as he jolted upright. "What's happening?"

A moment later, the skies opened, unleashing a torrent of rain so hard it drowned out the thunder and dimmed the lightning. But as he sat there, the man who had left his safe Pennsylvania neighborhood to visit the unknown halfway around the world could not think about the powerful meteorological event unfolding before him. Nor could he think about fly-fishing, his passion, and one of the adventures he had hoped to share with his son while in Africa.

"All I could think about was what I was going to do with the quality time I had left in my life," he says. "All I could think about was that morning." That morning, van Beuren found himself first in Nairobi, in a densely populated slum where orphans of AIDS victims lived alone in extreme poverty. And then later in a village on Rusinga, where a young man without even a high-school education had somehow managed to pull together the necessary means to start not only a medical center, but an international export business to support it.

Images from those encounters did not sweep over van Beuren immediately. But as the day's cadence slowed, and the clock turned past midnight, and that storm drew near with a strength he'd never seen, they came into focus. As the CEO of one of the biggest multi-sports facilities on America's East Coast vividly tried to recall every last detail of his day, a message reverberated through his body.

"It was like God was speaking," van Beuren says. "That storm was his cleansing me, and I knew what I had to do. Everything was all of the sudden extremely clear."

Philanthropic Travel tests our comfort zones, generates positive emotions, ignites old dreams, empowers entrepreneurial initiatives and recalibrates financial and estate plans for families with a new-found sense of mission.

Our decision to create a living legacy allows us the opportunity to engage our children as financially responsible directors of family philanthropy potentially generating a legacy of global philanthropic engagement that shines like a lighthouse into the future.

We Love the Way You Dream..

"Savvy individuals and forward thinking families realize that supporting a cause bigger than themselves is a powerful way to forge deeper familial bonds.

Interested in using their time together more wisely, our clients ask us to transcend traditional vacation planning and facilitate personal 'aha moments' that launch engaged living legacies.

Travel is a tool in our 'philanthropy workshop' that we use to help people apply their personal abilities to the greatest good.

We understand that transforming a 'do-gooder's inclination' into a high impact philanthropist requires an artful and consultative approach. We excel at interweaving the traditional fun, excitement, and adventure of a 'vacation,' with opportunities for applied leadership, emotional maturity, and personal commitment.

We recommend they do so privately to insure family intimacy and the time to reflect on the joy of giving essential to the healthy development of self, family, and community.

FYI: Insights for Wise Humanitarian Action

Exquisite Safaris Philanthropic Travel client's time spent with partner NGO's varies from as little as a day to an entire week. Our role as trusted philanthropy advisor is to determine how deeply the person or family wants to understand the current humanitarian/environmental issues, and then how they can best utilize their time and financial resources to deliver the greatest impact on the specific issues they decide to support."
-David Chamberlain

``
"Money is the voice of your commitment.... let's use money -the thing that people think is so evil -to bring in the light, to transform the future. In a culture of the 'runaway more,' richer, thinner, smarter, better, there is no way to be satisfied. We have lost the meaning of 'enough' - from businesses, societies and communities, to the dinner table.

The 'more is better' mentality is becoming the nightmare that is killing the planet. We need a new relationship with 'enough.' In the culture of scarcity that is generated in our consumer culture, there is no moment of sufficiency.

We have to help people reclaim that.

Insights for Wise Humanitarian Action

"Exquisite Safaris Philanthropic commitment to High Impact Philanthropy presents Checklist for Effective Disaster Response -Insights for Wise Humanitarian Action in collaboration with PhilanthropyNow and The Raquim Foundation." -D Chamberlain

Free Download: Insights for Wise Humanitarian Action

What Are People Are Saying About the Checklist?

After more than 20 years of international disaster response I can say this checklist is the most comprehensive I have used or seen. The timely use of this instrument can save millions of dollars and mitigate needless suffering by disaster victims exacerbated by well meaning but poorly informed contributors. I plan to incorporate it into our training programs and share it, with the agencies, corporations and NGOs who contract with us for services. Congratulations on an exceptional product and an anticipatory "Thank You" from those you will help through this work.
- Grady P. Bray, PhD, President, Crisis Human Services, Inc.

"The first response to an emergency can often be fast and chaotic. These guidelines are essential as a governing road map for the foundation of any critical response plan."
- Carsten Henningsen, Director, Community Friends

"As a United Nations official having worked in operational activities for development, recovery and relief for more than 15 years in countries experiencing natural disasters and human-inflicted humanitarian crises, I find this Checklist a comprehensive tool with very considerable practical value. This cumulative advice based on experience and wisdom gathered from both success and frustrating shortcomings of many organizations will help make all of our efforts more effective. I commend this Checklist."
- Herb Behrstock, President United Nations Association-USA East Bay Chapter, (retired senior officer of UN Development Program (UNDP), Raqim Foundation advisor)

"WOW! I wish we had had this document weeks ago. The LOGISTICS issues documented by this report are ones we are engaged in untangling now in response to the Haiti earthquake. I can say from long-term and recent experience that this tracks very closely with our experiences and assessments, as well as with our beliefs and values. On behalf of Project K.I.D., I know this is a document we will disseminate to donors and make accessible through our website. This is a wonderful product to introduce to the philanthropy community that provides clear, concise considerations that would be helpful for any NGO or philanthropist engaging in disaster response to work through step by step."
- Lenore T. Ealy, Ph.D., Director, The Project for New Philanthropy Studies

Why Is This Checklist Timely?
Disasters continue to occur . . . impacting more people in population centers . . . calling for smarter, greater, sustained humanitarian response.

Is International Voluntourism Effective?

Philanthropic Travel is a Learning Experience; not a Service (Voluntourism) Trip.

FYI: Insights for Wise Humanitarian Action

grin Got Questions?

Share

Tim Ogden PhilanthropyAction.com:
Each year, more than a million Americans, the majority of them teenagers or college students, travel to other countries on "service trips." Lasting for a week or two, the trips are conceived as a way for Americans to see developing world poverty up-close and to "help."

The help usually takes the form of some low-skill labor project like building a classroom or rehabilitating a small house.

Originally the sole province of church youth groups, the service trip has become increasingly popular as "a vacation with meaning."

Now that another million travelers have returned home and are back to their normal lives, the Wall Street Journal points out the myriad reasons why such trips are a bad idea.

The summary is that it is ridiculous to spend tens of thousands of dollars flying Americans to a foreign country to poorly perform a task that could be done cheaper, better and with more beneficial long-term effect by high-skill local labor.
My epiphany on the pointlessness of such trips came while spending a month volunteering at an international NGO's famine'relief operation in Ethiopia.

Despite my good intentions it was abundantly clear that I had no useful skills for the situation. Apparently this message is sinking in, the Washington Post ran a story this summer noting that many churches are abandoning such trips.

Q: What is the difference between Exquisite Safaris Philanthropic Travel and Voluntourism? Will I be required to 'work' during my vacation? Can I work if I choose to?

A: Our non-governmental organization (NGO) partners specifically request that your learning visit result in a generous tax deductible monetary donation rather than your personal labor or ancillary gifts in kind.

Exceptions to the 'do no labor' NGO protocol include medical doctors, nurses, and technologists with hard to come by specific skills who are willing to serve at the NGO's request.

Exquisite Safaris Philanthropic Travel has raised over 1 million dollars since 2008. 100% has been donated to high impact NGO's (non-government organizations) in destinations in the USA and around the world.

Philanthropy Trip: Living Well Doing Good

There are many variations on the story of stone soup, but they all involve a traveler coming into a town.

The inhabitants try to discourage the traveler from staying, fearing he wants them to give him food. They tell him in no uncertain terms that there's no food anywhere to be found.

The traveler explains that he doesn't need any food and that, in fact, he was planning to make a soup to share with all of them. The villagers watch suspiciously as he builds a fire and fills a cauldron with water.

With great ceremony, he pulls a stone from a bag, dropping the stone into the pot of water. He sniffs the brew extravagantly and exclaims how delicious stone soup is. As the villagers begin to show interest, he mentions how good the soup would be with just a little cabbage in it.

A villager brings out a cabbage to share. This episode repeats itself until the soup has cabbage, carrots, onions, and beets-indeed, a substantial soup that feeds everyone in the village.

This story addresses the human tendency to hoard in times of deprivation. When resources are scarce, we pull back and put all of our energy into self-preservation. We isolate ourselves and shut out others.

As the story of stone soup reveals, in doing so, we often deprive ourselves and everyone else of a feast.

This metaphor plays out beyond the realm of food. We hoard ideas, love, and energy, thinking we will be richer if we keep to them to ourselves, when in truth we make the world, and ourselves, poorer whenever we greedily stockpile our reserves.

The traveler was able to see that the villagers were holding back, and he had the genius to draw them out and inspire them to give, thus creating a spread that none of them could have created alone.

Are you like one of the villagers, holding back?

If you come forward and share your gifts, you will inspire others to do the same. The reward is a banquet that can nourish many.
