Luxury Volunteers: Mixing High Life with Higher Purpose -Who says you can't help the needy while also pampering yourself? Typical "voluntourism" trips usually involve backpacks, hiking boots, dusty cots and - if you're lucky - outhouses. Travelers on these trips spend weeks roughing it in the wild to build schools, feed orphans or protect threatened wildlife.

For those who prefer doing good while also sleeping under goose-down duvets or eating catered meals with bottled wine, there is a new trend called "philanthropic travel." A growing number of luxury travel groups now offer volunteer trips or other philanthropic activities that bring some of the world's wealthiest people (North American's and Europeans) to some of the most needy places on earth.

Exquisite Safaris Philanthropic Travel offer private luxury vacations costing between $300-1200 per person per day (depending on the traveler's choice of of accommodations and time of year). But between the five-star plus accommodations and the chef-prepared meals, travelers have the opportunity to deliver bags of rice to slums in Nairobi or visit orphanages for disabled children in Cambodia. The hope is that these wealthy travelers (North American's and Europeans) will feel a personal connection with the people and places they visit, and be moved to donate money to help them. Along with helping travelers connect with philanthropic causes, Exquisite Safaris also donates $250 dollars per traveler to their partner organizations working directly with those causes, including the Butterfly Tree Project in Zambia and the "Q" Fund, which helps AIDS orphans in Africa. -Karen Foerstel TravelBeat.net
