On Earth, early 21st century:
A death by starvation occurs every 3.6 seconds.
A death by AIDS occurs every 14 seconds, though it is treatable.
A death by malaria occurs every 30 seconds, though it is curable.
There are 6.1 billion people, 1.4 billion of whom live in extreme poverty.
But there is enough to go around. The chasm between the privileged and the destitute is not uncrossable. On the contrary, we of the developed world do now have the resources to cure this human calamity, and without significant compromise to our present way of life. -Dr. Ari Mintz
