Jay Z: Global Water Crisis
Tuesday, August 22, 2006

The United Nations, MTV and Def Jam Records CEO Shawn "Jay-Z" Carter are partnering to increase awareness of the world water crisis.
The partnership, announced Wednesday at U.N. headquarters in New York, aims to draw mainstream attention to the deteriorating global water crisis through Carter's upcoming international tour.
The rap musician plans to travel to several regions around the world where unclean water and poor sanitation directly results in the death of 4,500 children daily.
According to U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan, who attended the event, more than a billion people lack access to safe drinking water and some 2.6 billion people have no access to proper sanitation.
Carter's tour, which kicks off Sept. 9, will encourage youth in the United States and abroad to help alleviate the water crisis, highlighting youth-led solutions such as solar-generated water pumps and the PlayPump, a children's merry go round that pumps water from below ground. Carter told reporters he hopes to distribute 1,000 PlayPumps in devastated areas.
"After hearing and reading some of the startling statistics about the lack of clean water, I realized I needed to bring attention to this issue. I know through joining with experts through the United Nations and partnering with MTV to bring the word to our communities, we can make a difference," Carter said.
MTV will air a documentary special on Carter's journey entitled "Diary of Jay-Z: Water for Life," on Nov. 24 on MTV's worldwide network, which is broadcast in 179 countries. Those tuning in will be invited to take any of twelve steps associated with "Break the Addiction," MTV's year-long campaign to engage youth to reduce their impact on global warming.
"I'm very excited not only to be a rock star in these countries, but also to help," said Carter.
