Is International Voluntourism Effective?

Philanthropic Travel is a Learning Experience; not a Service (Voluntourism) Trip.
Share
Tim Ogden PhilanthropyAction.com:
Each year, more than a million Americans, the majority of them teenagers or college students, travel to other countries on "service trips." Lasting for a week or two, the trips are conceived as a way for Americans to see developing world poverty up-close and to "help."
The help usually takes the form of some low-skill labor project like building a classroom or rehabilitating a small house.
Originally the sole province of church youth groups, the service trip has become increasingly popular as "a vacation with meaning."
Now that another million travelers have returned home and are back to their normal lives, the Wall Street Journal points out the myriad reasons why such trips are a bad idea.
The summary is that it is ridiculous to spend tens of thousands of dollars flying Americans to a foreign country to poorly perform a task that could be done cheaper, better and with more beneficial long-term effect by high-skill local labor. My epiphany on the pointlessness of such trips came while spending a month volunteering at an international NGO's famine'relief operation in Ethiopia.
Despite my good intentions it was abundantly clear that I had no useful skills for the situation. Apparently this message is sinking in, the Washington Post ran a story this summer noting that many churches are abandoning such trips.

Q: What is the difference between Exquisite Safaris Philanthropic Travel and Voluntourism? Will I be required to 'work' during my vacation? Can I work if I choose to?
A: Our non-governmental organization (NGO) partners specifically request that your learning visit result in a generous tax deductible monetary donation rather than your personal labor or ancillary gifts in kind.
Exceptions to the 'do no labor' NGO protocol include medical doctors, nurses, and technologists with hard to come by specific skills who are willing to serve at the NGO's request.
Exquisite Safaris Philanthropic Travel has raised over 1 million dollars since 2008. 100% has been donated to high impact NGO's (non-government organizations) in destinations in the USA and around the world.

Philanthropy Trip: Living Well Doing Good

There are many variations on the story of stone soup, but they all involve a traveler coming into a town.
Share
The inhabitants try to discourage the traveler from staying, fearing he wants them to give him food. They tell him in no uncertain terms that there's no food anywhere to be found.
The traveler explains that he doesn't need any food and that, in fact, he was planning to make a soup to share with all of them. The villagers watch suspiciously as he builds a fire and fills a cauldron with water.
With great ceremony, he pulls a stone from a bag, dropping the stone into the pot of water. He sniffs the brew extravagantly and exclaims how delicious stone soup is. As the villagers begin to show interest, he mentions how good the soup would be with just a little cabbage in it.
A villager brings out a cabbage to share. This episode repeats itself until the soup has cabbage, carrots, onions, and beets-indeed, a substantial soup that feeds everyone in the village.
This story addresses the human tendency to hoard in times of deprivation. When resources are scarce, we pull back and put all of our energy into self-preservation. We isolate ourselves and shut out others.
As the story of stone soup reveals, in doing so, we often deprive ourselves and everyone else of a feast.
This metaphor plays out beyond the realm of food. We hoard ideas, love, and energy, thinking we will be richer if we keep to them to ourselves, when in truth we make the world, and ourselves, poorer whenever we greedily stockpile our reserves.
The traveler was able to see that the villagers were holding back, and he had the genius to draw them out and inspire them to give, thus creating a spread that none of them could have created alone.
Are you like one of the villagers, holding back?
If you come forward and share your gifts, you will inspire others to do the same. The reward is a banquet that can nourish many.

It was a beautiful day, the sun beat down
I had the radio on, I was drivin'
trees flew by, me and Del were singin' little Runaway
I was flyin'
Yeah runnin' down a dream
that never would come to me
workin' on a mystery, goin' wherever it leads
runnin' down a dream
I felt so good like anything was possible
I hit cruise control and rubbed my eyes
the last three days the rain was un-stoppable
it was always cold, no sunshine
(Repeat Chorus)
I rolled on as the sky grew dark
I put the pedal down to make some time
there's something good waitin' down this road
I'm pickin' up whatever's mine

The Beneficiaries: Burmese citizens who have lost a limb to land mines.
Burma High Resolution Slideshow
Reported cases of land mine accidents in Burma have skyrocketed, increasing 80% over prior years. The death rate has doubled.
Civilians account for the majority of those injured or killed by land mines with more than half being injured while foraging for forest and jungle produce, collecting wood, or traveling. Access to medical services and prosthetics fabrication is problematic.
Since the International Committee of the Red Cross suspended its physical mobility and rehabilitation programs in Burma in 2007, land mine accident survivors must seek services across the border in Thailand or at refugee camps scattered along the Thai-Myanmar border.
Time is always a major concern for the beneficiaries as they wait for their prosthetics - precious time worrying that their family might be in danger from army or rebel forces.
Proof of Impact
For every limb provided, you will receive a before-and-after photo of the recipient along with some personal data about the recipient.

It's vital to manage, through collaboration, the impact of tourism and the low-volume, high yield operators particularly in the luxury tier are in a unique position to deliver service and stability to world heritage. The Evolution of Travel Philanthropy

Share
There are times in our lives when all the signs seem to be pointing us in a particular direction. Our thoughts and dreams are echoed in the songs and stories we hear and the media we see.
Maybe the message we are getting from the universe doesn't even make sense in the "real" world, but somewhere inside, these urges feel right. Perhaps you feel you should move to a new city although your life where you are is just fine. Or maybe you feel the desire to pursue a new direction in your career when it never really interested you before.
When we spend time getting in touch with our higher selves, our intuition sends us directives to lead us to become our best and most fulfilled selves.Instead of deterring us from our goal, these questions only serve to clarify our focus to move us forward.
And when we are open and listening, the next step is to take action and go for it.
Once we make the decision to pursue our inner urgings, the universe sets into motion the means for all sorts of details to fall into place.
A sense of peace will come over us, because we know that any questions will no longer make us wonder if our dreams are possible, but how to make them happen.
We need not throw caution to the wind to follow our dream. The positive shift in our energy affects everything around us. Like a rush of water, it goes ahead to clear debris from our path so that we can go forward. Our new attitude also attracts likeminded people. Sometimes even the most unlikely angels arrive to help us along our way with the information and support we need. Wherever your dreams are pointing you today, take a step.
Take action and manifest your inner urges and soul whisperings.
